October 4, 2008: Riding for Readers
SVP Partner Patsy Rowe and Donna DiFillipo, Executive Director of Raising a Reader Massachusetts after Patsy's 50 mile ride to raise funds for Raising a Reader. Patsy raised $5310 for RAR, $4800 of it from SVP partners!

October 25, 2007: Inward Bound with Artists for Humanity
About a dozen of us participated in Inward Bound (www.afhboston.com). It is a new program that invites corporations to bring their employees to AFH to be taught the basic principles of design and color by the AFH students. SVPers proved that they are not all brains – there is a lot of artistic talent in this group!

September 29, 2007: Rodman Ride for Raising A Reader
From Donna DiFillippo, Executive Director, Raising A Reader
Well she did it - 25 miles and she barely broke a sweat. As a matter of fact, she came across the finish line with her arms in the air. As you can see from the last photo she left in the company of Team UniFirst who were also riding on behalf of RAR, but she was having so much fun she just took off and left them in the dust. She's a ringer and I hope we can get her back again next year.
What a wonderful day it was...great weather, fun atmosphere with music and lots of food. But best of all, through the generosity of folks like you Raising A Reader will make over $75,000 from this event. This far surpasses my initial goal of $25,000, but just wait until next year. I am going to work even harder to recruit sponsors and teams because really, the event is just so much fun.
Of course none of it would be possible if people did not volunteer to take time out of their day to ride a bike on behalf of kids. So thanks Stefania - I appreciate you riding on behalf of Raising A Reader and Social Venture Partners. I hope you had as much fun on Saturday as I did.
Look forward to seeing you all soon.
Best, Donna
September 20, 2007: Investment Cycle Kick-off Meeting and Beer Tasting
Not only did we have a great selection of food from Haley House Bakery and a fun beer tasting led by our friend Allen Wallace, but we were reminded of what a rewarding experience it is to be a partner in SVP. Tony Helies, partner, and newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors, welcomed us with a reminder of the accomplishments you have had this year; successful engagements with new investees More Than Words and Raising a Reader, great new programs at Artists for Humanity made possible with your dollars and time, and the addition of several new partners.
Hops and Barley
Partner, Patty Gold then led us in a discussion of last year’s investment process and shared how much she enjoyed learning about various nonprofits in Boston. Patty found that the time commitment (Aprox. 4 meetings in person/by phone, reading of concept papers and proposals, participation in vetting npo’s and site visits) was very manageable and encouraged partners and friends to take part. Seeing the difference these organizations make in the lives of people in our community is incredibly inspiring.

Partners taste beer varieties and discuss the differences between ales and lagers.

January 18, 2007: SVP Boston Winter Celebration
Partners and friends gathered at the home of partners Allison and Arnold for the third annual SVP Boston Winter Celebration. Folks exchanged stories for the January site visits; welcomed two new partners, Jay Baldwin and Cintra Pollack; and enjoyed (is that the right word?!) a Yankee swap to end all swaps (no joke).

Don't be fooled by the wrapping David...alas, the scandalous wrapping revealed an easy button!

The crowd looks on wondering what gifts will come their way in this swap.

The Octo dog proved to be the favorite of the Yankee swap.

Jess admires the spoils of her swap. She has been looking for a bug bracelet in acrylic for quite some time!
Jan 31, 2006: SVP celebrates with Artists for Humanity (AFH)

Over 50 partners and friends turned out to meet AFH, sculpt flowers from plastic bottles, splatter paint and draw. SVPB was not only able to introduce others to AFH, but helped support them further with the sale of their products. Partners and friends purchased AFH merchandise - $334 in product sales and $900 (1) painting sale. A total of $1234!

November 5, 2005: Serve and Grow with The Food Project

A team of 12 SVP-ers took to the fields in Lincoln on November 5th and helped harvest over 500 pounds of vegetables for The Red Cross and Pine Street Inn. We also planted garlic, took down tents, and cleaned picnic tables to help TFP prepare for winter.

June 29, 2005: Project Place Successfully Launches HomePlate Chili Push Cart!
Jess Brooks and Cindy Hanshaw joined Suzanne Kenney, Marie Esposito, Christina Murray, and all the HomePlate folks for a bowl of veggie chili at the Grand Opening on June 9th in Downtown Crossing. Even Mayor Tom Menino stopped by for a bowl (See more pics below) to show his support for Project Place.
Executive Director Suzanne Kenney reported that as a result of SVP’s support they have created job opportunities for 6 homeless individuals. This week they received some good press on the program. Pauline Chiou from Channel 4 did a piece and the Boston Globe included a picture of the pushcart and clients in their Food Section on Wednesday. I hope all of you will take a moment to celebrate the launching of HomePlate and the new beginnings for six individuals!
Project Place’s chili pushcart is now open for business. The cart is located at Downtown Crossing, right near Macy’s. They’ve got meat and veggie chili options, corn bread, and plenty of Pepsi-brand drinks. The price is good -- $4 for a giant bowl – and the chili itself can’t be beat! If you’re ever downtown at lunch time, be sure to stop by for a bowl.
