WHO-WE-ARE

Shirley Marten Shirley Marten

Shirley Marten immigrated to America in her early thirties as a liberal-minded, housebound wife and mother. She discovered freedom and sunshine, virgin land and the wealth and diversity of opportunities. Inspired to become a committed volunteer, she worked in hospitals, libraries, the Red Cross, and local community programs. Working and sharing the skills and cross-cultural relationships of others of all ages was enriching in many different ways. She saw organizations set goals, develop and strengthen and also experienced and appreciated the friendships she made. Citizen responsibility and giving back became paramount in her belief of a life lived with purpose. Ten years ago she and her husband set up a family foundation and it brought a more meaningful focus to her philanthropic giving. Their mission is to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate than themselves. A five year pilot scheme of sending a group of at-risk, inner-city youth to a summer camp is planned to expand to a year round program. Hopefully, through stewardship, this will promote well being and the spirit of nature throughout the four seasons. After growing up with the school motto "Age Quod Agis'" and saying "Long live the Queen", now she says "Long live Social Venture Partners!"
