What types of organizations can apply for an SVP investment?
Applicants must be classified as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the IRS or have an appropriate fiscal agent, with programs serving Boston and surrounding communities. Applicants must fit with our investment focus area and meet additional criteria outlined in each cycle’s grant guidelines.
Why join SVP?
Targeted, leveraged, impactful philanthropy; strategic engagement with innovative nonprofits; a community model for social impact.
What is the current investment focus?
Education, Workforce Development, and Family Economic Self-Sufficiency are our investment areas. We accept applications on an invitation only basis, but you are welcome to inquire more about us through the Contact Us page.
What are typical grant amounts and how many investments are made each year?
Our investments include both money and our expertise. Typically, we make one or two new investments each year, in addition to evaluating our current investments for renewal. The financial investment amount may vary, but often follows this pattern: $30,000 for the first year, $20,000 for the second year, $10,000 for the third year. In addition to our financial commitment, SVP Partners volunteer their time and expertise and work directly with our Investees on strategic projects that help build organizational capacity. Our Partners also actively leverage their professional networks to bring additional value and resources to our Investees. Our Investees report that the value of our in-kind contribution exceeds the financial contribution we make.
How do I become an SVP Investee?
Because SVP Boston selects a specific area of focus for each investment, we accept applications by invitation only. Once the investment cycle begins, there are several steps that applicants must complete. For more information, please see the description of our Investment Process.
When does the next investment cycle begin?
Our 2010 investment cycle runs from March-early May 2010.
May I be contacted when the next investment cycle begins?
Yes. If your organization meets our investment criteria, we will gladly notify you when our next investment cycle. Please note that our investment criteria are fairly specific, so many interested organizations may not qualify. To provide us with information about you and your organization, Contact Us.
How do I get more information?
You are in the right place. The answers to many questions are here on our website. You may also Contact Us if you have more specific questions.
Why do you call your grants "investments"?

We use the term “investment” instead of “grant” to emphasize that the money we give to a nonprofit represents more than a financial investment. SVP Boston makes a 3 year financial and time commitment to work in partnership with our Investees, helping them achieve their growth and improvement goals. Our Investees, in turn, make a commitment to monitoring their progress and achieving specific, agreed-upon objectives.

What is Social Venture Partners International (SVPI)?
